RMC's RCO Grant Writers Help Hope Town Ohio Win United Way Funding for Hope on Wheels

A Big Win for Recovery and Transportation in Portage County

Recovery Movement Consulting (RMC), one of the nation's leading RCO grant writers, is excited to announce another successful grant award on behalf of one of our incredible nonprofit partners. Hope Town Ohio has been awarded a $15,000 multi-year grant from United Way of Portage County to support its innovative social enterprise, Hope on Wheels. The award provides $5,000 annually for three years, helping to expand critical transportation services for some of the community’s most vulnerable residents.

Hope on Wheels: Meeting an Urgent Need for Accessible Transportation

Hope on Wheels is a mission-driven social enterprise operated by Hope Town Ohio, a Recovery Community Organization (RCO) that works daily to remove barriers for individuals and families impacted by addiction, poverty, and systemic challenges.

Reliable transportation is one of the most significant yet overlooked barriers to recovery, healthcare, employment, and social reintegration.

This challenge is especially acute for:

  • Individuals in substance use disorder (SUD) recovery

  • Low-income and uninsured individuals

  • Seniors and elderly residents

  • People with disabilities and mobility limitations

  • Justice-involved individuals re-entering the workforce

In 2024 alone, Hope on Wheels provided 11,875 total rides, traveling 334,837 miles to ensure individuals could attend recovery programs, medical appointments, job interviews, and court-ordered commitments. However, the demand for wheelchair-accessible transportation continues to far exceed available resources, leaving many residents stranded when they need help the most.

The United Way Grant: Expanding Wheelchair-Accessible Services

With this new funding from United Way of Portage County, Hope Town Ohio will now be able to purchase a fully wheelchair-accessible conversion van, addressing one of the most pressing service gaps in the community.

For individuals who rely on kidney dialysis, cancer treatments, physical therapy, and other life-sustaining medical services, missing appointments due to lack of accessible transportation can have devastating consequences. Unfortunately, current Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) providers frequently face service delays, denials, or outright no-shows, creating an unsafe and unreliable system for those who need consistent care.

By adding this wheelchair-accessible vehicle, Hope on Wheels will:

  • Reduce missed medical appointments

  • Increase participation in recovery support services

  • Support social reintegration and employment readiness

  • Improve health outcomes and quality of life for hundreds of residents

In collaboration with United Way, Hope Town Ohio has requested that all funds be distributed in Year 1 to allow for the immediate purchase of the vehicle. In return, Hope Town Ohio has committed to reporting on program outcomes across Years 1, 2, and 3, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the grant period.
