Meet Shannon Egan: Award-Winning SAMHSA Grant Writer & Founder of RMC
Leading the Recovery Movement with Purpose, Passion, and Proven Results
Shannon Egan, a woman in long-term recovery, is the founder and CEO of Recovery Movement Consulting (RMC)—the only peer-led grant writing and consulting firm in the nation exclusively focused on substance use disorder (SUD) and behavioral health nonprofits. Since entering recovery in January 2011, Shannon has dedicated her life to supporting addiction recovery organizations, using her voice, experience, and expertise to drive real change.
A nationally recognized SAMHSA grant writer and passionate advocate, Shannon has raised over $15 million in funding for recovery and mental health organizations across the United States. Her peer-led approach means she doesn't just understand the field—she's lived it. She works closely with Recovery Community Organizations (RCOs), treatment providers, and peer support programs to secure the funding needed to expand life-saving services.
Before founding RMC, Shannon had a remarkable career in international journalism and humanitarian work. From 2004 to 2006, she served as a press officer and freelance journalist for the United Nations and IRIN News in Sudan, covering the Darfur genocide, HIV/AIDS, and global crises. Her reporting brought attention to critical health and human rights issues in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
In 2007, she transitioned to working with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in New York City, focusing on reproductive health, women’s rights, and humanitarian responses in crisis zones such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nepal, and the Pacific Islands. She also served as the Development Director for USARA, an RCO in Utah and for the Humane Society of Utah.
Since launching RMC, Shannon has become a leading voice in the New Advocacy Recovery Movement, working with policymakers and grassroots leaders alike to reduce addiction stigma and dismantle systemic barriers to recovery. In 2015, she was appointed Utah State Captain for the UNITE to Face Addiction Rally, held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where she helped represent thousands of individuals and families in recovery. That same year, she self-published her memoir, No Tourists Allowed: Seeking Inner Peace & Sobriety in War-Torn Sudan.
Today, Shannon continues to provide peer-led consulting and grant writing for SUD and mental health nonprofits, while also speaking at national conferences on topics such as Creativity in Recovery, Multiple Pathways, and Recovery-Driven Leadership.
She resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by her beloved rescue animals: Lovey and Jagger, two senior pups with big personalities; Gizmo and Tigger, her gentle feline companions; and Paisley, her mischievous house rabbit with a taste for baseboards and backyard flowers.
